Chamber adds new Economic Development position
NORWICH – Commerce Chenango is looking for someone with business development experience and knowledge of the local workforce and business structure to fill a newly-created economic development position.
The new staff member will round out the organization’s business development arm, Development Chenango, which was formed by the merger of the Chenango County Area Corporation and the Greater Norwich Local Development Corporation.
The new economic development specialist position will report directly to Commerce Chenango President Maureen Carpenter, who also serves as executive director of Development Chenango.
They will be responsible for actively recruiting businesses to Chenango County and work toward developing the county’s industrial park and developing the infrastructure necessary to encourage and support that growth, said Carpenter.
The additional person is necessary for her organization “to really push forward and create opportunities,” she explained. With only one and a half staff members devoted to economic development right now, their role has been more reactive, she added.
“This is going to take us to the next level. It will allow us to be proactive in business retention and recruiting,” said Carpenter, who said she hopes to have the position filled by the end of January.
The new position will work closely with the other full-time economic development staff person, Business Development & Zone Coordinator Jennifer Tavares.
Dividing up the work will allow Tavares to focus her attention on further development within the Empire Zone, business and job retention, administering the organization’s loan programs and growing new business through the microenterprise program.
Carpenter, who held the economic development position before being appointed as president and CEO in May of 2007, has seen the need for the new position for some time. There are already several projects in the works, she said, that need the additional attention.
Carpenter approached the Chenango County Board of Supervisors earlier this year about increasing the economic development money her organization receives in order to make the new position possible. Her request was denied.
“We did not get additional funding from the county,” Carpenter said. For now, the Area Corporation will foot the bill for the position but she is optimistic they will find other funding sources, such as grants, to support the added staff member in the long term.
According to the job posting, starting salary for the full-time position will be in the $35,000 to $38,000 range, plus benefits.
Interested parties should submit a resume and cover letter to Carpenter’s attention at 19 Eaton Ave., Norwich, 13815. A full job listing is available in the classified section of The Evening Sun and online at http://www.evesun.com/classifieds/listings/
