Woman killed in South New Berlin accident

SOUTH NEW BERLIN – A 49-year-old New Berlin woman was killed Saturday when another driver failed to stop at a red light intersection and collided with her car in a T-bone collision.
Rosalie Searles, of County Rt. 18, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chenango County Medical Examiner Dr. John Cruz. Searles died as a result of head and neck injuries sustained during the crash, which took place at about 12:54 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of state routes 8 and 23.
The vehicle that struck Searles was driven by 22-year-old Christopher Greco of New Berlin.
Police said both Greco and a 21-year-old passenger who was traveling with him suffered minor injuries in the crash. Police said all occupants were wearing their seat belts.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Richard Cobb said Greco was traveling north along State Rt. 8 and that the front of his vehicle struck the victim’s car perpendicular, hitting the driver’s side door.
Cobb said the speed limit at the intersection is 35 miles per hour and that the collision took place at or below that speed.
“It was not a high-speed collision in a sense. It was not a not a 55- or 65-mile-an-hour crash,” he said.
Cobb said he couldn’t elaborate on what caused Greco to neglect the red traffic light because he had been issued tickets and would be appearing in court.
Sheriff’s deputies charged Greco with running the red light and issued him two traffic tickets, failure to yield the right of way and driving an unregistered vehicle.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Searles are pending with the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich.
