Norwich 79, Chenango Valley 55
NORWICH – Norwich expected to put its fair share of points on the board against Chenango Valley Tuesday night. What came as a surprise was the ease with which the Tornado finished off their seventh win to start the 2008-2009 season.
A 28-10 first quarter positioned Norwich in the driver’s seat, and with the exception of a second-quarter hiccup, it was perhaps the most impressive win to date. “That’s a very good team we beat tonight,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “Their starting five can match up with anybody. To come out like that (in the first quarter) is encouraging.”
The Warriors came out in their standard zone defense. The decision to stick with the zone proved a bad move.
Corey Dietrich scored the first nine points for Norwich – all on three pointers. Forwards Vaughn Labor and David Carson were red-hot combining for eight points, and Josh Borfitz and Derek Hughes added three balls late in the quarter – the latter coming on a bank shot at the first-quarter horn.’
”We try to play like that in every game,” Abbott said. “Sometimes the shots don’t go in, and tonight they did. We did kind of stink it up in the second quarter. We made some bad choices and got caught out of position a couple of times.”
CV junior sharpshooter Tom Hull scored 12 points in the first half keeping the visitors within 14 points at halftime.
Norwich racheted the margin back up to 19 in the third quarter getting four early points from Tim Clark, and traditional three-point play by Dietrich, and a three ball in the corner from Borfitz off a Hughes dish. “We knew we probably would be able to score on them,” Abbott said. “Chenango Valley is an offensive club. To hold them to 55 is pretty good, but we probably should have done better.”
Dietrich, coming off a season-low five points in his previous game, led Norwich with 17. Labor added 14, Borfitz 11, and Carson 10. Norwich plays Vestal Sunday at 5:45 p.m. in the STOP-DWI tourney at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. “We’re excited to be 7-0 and looking forward to the DWI,” Abbott said. “It wouldn’t have been a whole lot of fun going down there 6-1.”
NOTES: The Tornado’s division rival, Oneonta, handed Seton Catholic Central its first loss last night, 52-48. The Saints, along with Vestal and Union-Endicott, comprise the Tornado’s four-team division at the DWI tourney.
