GREENE – Greene built a 12-point lead after three quarters, and hung on for the Greene Holiday Tournament championship in a matchup of unbeaten clubs.
U-E (5-1), down 38-26 after three periods, tied the game at 42-42 on Kara Brinthaupt’s basket with under two minutes to play. After a Tigers foul and subsequent technical foul, Liz Wentlent hit two free throws and Megan Kinne drained one of two freebies for Greene. To close out the game, Wentlent and Borst tacked on four more charity tosses.
“U-E has been good all year, and we were excited to play them,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We thought this would be a chance to impress some people and take notice. We have a nice team, too, and we played really well defensively for three quarters.”
Greene raced to a 15-10 lead after a quarter, and forced the Tigers out of their typical full-court pressure. Leading by nine at halftime and through the third stanza, Andrea Day picked a loose ball after a U-E turnover, and hit a three ball at the third-quarter horn to raise the Trojans’ lead to 12.
“We were a little tentative in the fourth quarter, but this was a good experience for us,” Gorton said. “It is something we will learn from, and I was pleased with the team’s courage and camaraderie. This was truly a team win.”
Borst had a game-high 18 points for Greene and was named the tourney’s most valuable player. Kinne and Wentlent added 10 points apiece, and were also selected to the all-tournament team.
