Oxford sets info meeting for Thursday

OXFORD – Residents of the Oxford Academy school district will have another opportunity to have their questions answered about three proposed capital project options being explored by the district’s administration and board of education.
A public information meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Middle School Auditorium to update residents on the proposed building project. The meeting will begin with a tour of the historic structure, followed by a presentation on the three options by Superintendent Randy Squier. The evening will conclude with a question and answer session.
The meeting is the second to be held on the subject of the capital project proposals. The first, held in December, was not well attended. The district has been promoting Thursday’s meeting in earnest to encourage a larger turnout.
Squier and the school board have come under fire from taxpayers who have questioned the need for an extensive capital project in light of the historic nature of the Middle School, the economic climate and the district’s declining enrollment. Oxford’s current student population is the lowest in 50 years, and is projected to continue its downward trend over the next five years.
In November, a petition stating these concerns was presented to the school board. The document bore the signatures of more than 660 district residents.
The first two options on the table involve renovating existing buildings while either leaving the district’s configuration as is or moving grades K-2 to the Middle School building and all other grades to the Primary/High School campus.
By far the most controversial is the third option outlined by the district’s architectural consultants, which would consolidate the district’s students on one K-12 campus and transform the current Middle School building into a bus garage and storage facility.
Oxford’s school board members have tried to assure district residents that no final determination has been made regarding which option will be pursued, and Board President Robin DeBrita has repeatedly stated that any proposal will need voter approval before being implemented.
The cost estimates released by the district at the Dec. 3 meeting ranged from $19.8 million to $26.7 million. The district is anticipating using EXCEL grant money from the State Department of Education to cover a portion of the local taxpayer share of the project.
