Phelps, the racing coconut, tours Norwich
NORWICH – A traveling coconut from Punta Gorda, Fla. arrived in Norwich last Tuesday to spread the message that Main Streets are alive and well.
Phelps the racing coconut is participating in a tour of the United States, already traveling to locations in Delaware, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Virginia before arriving in Norwich.
According to Linda Dobson, the Main Street Director in Punta Gorda, Fla., the idea to send Phelps on tour came to her after discussions focused on the negative effects of the economy. “A visiting coconut is a pick-me-up for those who requested a visit, and, most importantly, an opportunity for local media coverage when Phelps arrives.”
Norwich Business Improvement District Executive Director Pegi LoPresti signed up for a visit from Phelps. She explained that the effort was a way of connecting Main Street programs throughout the United States.
Phelps arrived in Norwich on Dec. 30. LoPresti said he enjoyed spending the New Year in Norwich and visited the YMCA early Monday morning to start working on his New Year’s resolutions.
Phelps’ tour of Norwich came to an end on Monday. His next trip will take him to South Orange, New Jersey.
