South New Berlin convenient store robbed at gunpoint
SOUTH NEW BERLIN – New York State Police troopers are looking for a masked gunman who entered the South New Berlin Quickway and demanded money from the cashier Wednesday night.
The employee, who was working alone at about 7:30 p.m. at the time of the robbery, said he was stocking the shelves in the cooler when he saw a customer come in.
“I asked him, ‘How can I help you?’ He had his arms inside his jacket holding something and then he pulled out a rifle and said ‘Gimme all your, money man,’” said the teenaged clerk, who asked not to be identified.
“He had a gun. It was in his coat and it was pointed right at me,” he said.
Troopers released still photos of surveillance footage taken inside the gas station located at the intersection of state Routes 8 and 23 in South New Berlin.
Police said they are looking for a white male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds, wearing a black ski mask with a grey hooded sweatshirt underneath a white-and-black checkered flannel jacket.
The suspect fled on foot in an unknown direction, armed with an unidentified long gun.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is being asked to contact the police at 561-7400.
The clerk said the suspect fled the scene while he was searching behind the counter for more money and did not see in what direction the robber fled.
“I basically opened the register and threw all the money on the counter. He took it and I started to get out the change from the register and he said, ‘I don’t want change man,’” said the teen.
The clerk said he experienced a wave of confusion and adrenaline during the robbery. “It seemed like it was a dream. It was surreal, like it wasn’t really happening, but it was. Time pretty much slowed down,” he said.
Immediately after the armed robber left the scene, the clerk pushed the store’s panic button and dialed 911 for help. Shortly thereafter, the Town of New Berlin Police Department and State Troopers responded.
State Police Lt. James Barnes of Sidney said investigators were working several leads. Barnes said he couldn’t recall a prior robbery in the New Berlin area. “I don’t know, but it’s been a long time, at least five years,” said Barnes.
Store manager Kim Voltz said she has been working for Quickway for the last seven years and had been transferred to the Southtown location only six months earlier. She was unaware of any past robberies at the location. The clerk said he had only worked at the store for the past three weeks.
The clerk, who said he was considering leaving his job due to the incident, works alone for several hours a night before closing the store at 10 p.m.
“I just don’t know it if was worth it for minimum wage,” he said.
