EITC Committee to offer free tax prep
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Earned Income Tax Credit Partnership Committee will kick off the 2008 tax season with a Super Saturday event on Jan. 31.
The EITC program offers free tax preparation to individuals who make $41,646 or less, depending on the number of qualifying children they have. The program has been operating in Chenango County since 2004.
“Last year, our coalition prepared over 590 tax returns in Chenango County and 610 in Madison County. Because of this program, more than $1 million was returned in tax refunds to low income families,” said Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco.
Manned by volunteers, the program provides tax preparation by IRS-trained individuals. Those eligible for the free tax preparation are able to e-file their tax return and have their refund direct deposited into their bank account at no cost.
The EITC program was first started to help bring additional state and federal funds back to Chenango County.
The EITC program is a collaborative effort, and in past years, partnership members have included Cornell Cooperative Extension, Opportunities for Chenango, Chenango United Way, GHS Federal Credit Union, Colgate University, AARP Tax Aide, Chenango County Farm Bureau, Manpower, IRS SPEC, Morrisville State College, Chenango County Department of Social Services and NBT Bank.
On Jan. 31, the Super Saturday event will kick off the tax season. Tax preparation appointments will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension, located at 99 North Broad St. in Norwich. Refreshments will be available, and some exhibitors will be present for the event.
Following the Super Saturday event, appointments can be made at other tax preparation sites around Chenango County. For more information or to schedule an appointment Chenango County families should call the OFC hotline at 336-2101 or 1-866-456-3051. Chenango County seniors should call the Chenango County Area Agency on the Aging at 337-1770.
