Norwich falters late against Windsor

Windsor 65, Norwich 63
NORWICH – Windsor progressed from feisty opponent, to a thorn in Norwich’s side, and eventually conqueror of the Tornado.
Tim Costello rolled in two foul shots with 4.2 seconds left to break a 63-63 tie, and Norwich junior Josh Borfitz’s 30-foot look at a game-winning shot was a tad long in Tuesday’s STAC matchup.
The Black Knights held Norwich without a point the final three minutes, handed Norwich’s its first league loss, and kept the purple and white at nine wins and holding.
“We couldn’t make the plays to put them away,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “We had a couple of opportunities from the field, the foul line, we grabbed some offensive rebounds...Windsor hung in there and made plays to win the game.”
Norwich turned around a game that was going the wrong way in a hurry. Matt Murray, he of the sweet three-point shot, canned his third trifecta in as many possessions to put the Knights up 41-30 midway through the third quarter.
Following a timeout, the Tornado resolve began with its defense. Yes, Windsor’s Brenton Jones added two more three-pointers to the scoreboard over the next four minutes, but in the meantime, Norwich rebounded with a 16-6 spurt. Richie Bonney had five points, David Carson three, Borfitz drained a deep three ball, and Timmy Clark added a three-point play.
A salvo that reduced a double-digit margin to one by quarter’s end picked up steam in the fourth. Clark scored or set up the first 14 points for Norwich. He bucketed seven, dished out three assists – two to David Carson and one to Casey Edwards – and Clark’s two free throws with 5:10 remaining had Norwich in front, 60-51.
It was 63-56 after Derek Hughes looked off a defender and drove uncontested for a layup at the 3:06 mark. Norwich turned it over three times down the stretch, while Windsor scrambled and rallied.
Murray hit a short jumper with 22 seconds left to tie the game, and Norwich’s Corey Dietrich missed a go-ahead shot on the ensuing possession. Costello was fouled dribbling toward halfcourt after a defensive rebound.
Murray led Windsor with 26 points and Jones added 22. The duo also split 10 three-pointers evenly. “I guess that (giving up 10 three-pointers) is what’s most disappointing,” Abbott said. “We knew that was their game, and we didn’t do a good job taking away what they do best. That’s normally where we are at our best.”
Carson had 15 points to lead Norwich (9-2), Bonney added 13, and Clark along with Borfitz chipped in with nine apiece.
