'Missing' Afton woman arrested for prostitution
AFTON – A four-day search for a missing Afton woman ended with her arrest for prostitution.
New York State Troopers discovered 23-year-old Yvonne M. Koepke in the Town of Burlington in Otsego County Wednesday after conducting a four-day search for the Afton woman, who was reported missing Saturday by her concerned mother.
Koepke was charged with misdemeanor prostitution in the Town of Afton and third degree falsely reporting an incident in the Town of Burlington.
New York State Police Investigator Jamie Bell said Koepke told police “multiple stories” including two separate stories about a false abduction and admitted her disappearance was related to a “sexual engagement.”
Bell had no explanation for Koepke’s conduct, saying, “She told her roommate she was running to the store and she just never came back. After that the story changes depending at which point we (police) talked to her. She had no reason to explain her sudden disappearance and I’m not sure if we’ll ever really get the truth,” said Bell.
Bell said police were initially concerned because Koepke left her cell phone at home, failed to report to work and did not notify even close family members or friends.
“It has got some of us just scratching our heads and wondering,” he said.
In a press release, state police said Koepke initially lied to investigators after Richfield Springs troopers discovered her crashed 2004 Chevrolet Malibu in the Town of Burlington.
Bell said, “She crashed her car, walked for several miles to call her mother and the phone went suddenly dead. Her mother contacted police and we were able to trace the call and shortly after that, a road patrol discovered her car.”
“Koepke had led responding troopers to believe that she had been held against her will since her disappearance. She later admitted that she was never held against her will,” said the statement.
In the course of the law enforcement effort to locate Koepke, police discovered information that led them to arrest her and another man on prostitution charges.
Robert A. West III, 23, of State Route 7 in Afton, was charged with the third degree patronization of a prostitute. He was ordered to appear in the Town of Afton Court, at 6 p.m. on Jan. 26.
Koepke was also issued an appearance ticket to appear in Town of Afton Court at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 28.
Bell said that Koepke was aware that police had been searching for her, but neglected to contact family members or authorities.
