Accused father and son crime duo now split by a guilty plea

NORWICH – An Afton man pleaded guilty to the top two counts against him Tuesday for his role in a string of burglaries that netted over $30,000 in stolen property while his father, and alleged co-conspirator, awaits his turn in court.
Matthew M. Snyder, 22, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary in a plea arrangement that will send him to state prison for four years.
He will also have to pay an undetermined amount of restitution that may be more than the stolen $30,000 because it could include any damage done to property during the course of the break-ins, reported the District Attorney’s Office.
“Mr. Matthew Snyder was a young man who terrorized his community by breaking into houses and the victims of these crimes and the community were in an uproar,” said District Attorney Joseph A. McBride.
He added, “And despite his age, he needs to removed from the community for a while to learn severity of his crimes.”
Matthew Snyder and his 53-year-old father, Curtis, also of Afton, were arrested together last Jan. 22 over allegations involving the theft and possession of nearly $30,000 worth of items allegedly taken from several burglarized residences.
Police said the father, who is awaiting trial, was in possession of several stolen items and they accused Curtis of attempting to “impede” their attempts to recover the property. Prosecutors also alleged that he stole over $3,000 worth of equipment and tools from a resident’s garage.
“The son’s plea arrangement does not compel him to testify against his father, whose trial is set for later this year,” said McBride.
Their arrest was the result of a collaboration of the New York State Police, Chenango County Sheriff’s Department, Afton Police Department and the Canadian Pacific Railroad Police. They were all involved with parts of the investigation into a large number of burglaries and larcenies reported over the last few years in and around the Afton area.
Matthew Snyder has been incarcerated since his arrest and will not be officially sentenced on his plea bargain until March 2. He is expected to get credit for time served and will then proceed to a state facility for approximately three years if Supreme Court Justice Kevin M. Dowd confirms the agreement.
