Armed man fights with police, injures two officers

NORWICH – Two police officers were injured last Monday after a man armed with a baseball bat fought with officers who were attempting to question him over a trespassing complaint.
Daniel R. Houck Jr., 48, of Oxford, was charged with felony second degree assault, second degree menacing, resisting arrest and second degree harassment.
Sheriff’s Deputies, New York State Troopers and Norwich City Police officers responded to a complaint of a trespass in progress at a Town of Norwich apartment building. Upon arrival, police discovered an emotionally upset Houck inside one of the apartments belonging to another person where he apparently kept some of his personal possessions, said police.
“When officers confronted Mr. Houck, he grabbed a nearby aluminum baseball bat and threatened officers,” said Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Richard Cobb.
In a brief stand off with Houck, officers repeatedly ordered him to put down the bat, and he eventually complied, said Cobb. However, when officers attempted to take Houck into custody and handcuff him, he became violent, striking a city police officer in the face and injuring the wrist of a deputy before he was subdued.
Cobb said that “a bat is considered a deadly weapon” under New York State law and given the “close proximity” of the confrontation, officers used great restraint in resolving the situation.
Houck was arraigned in Town of Norwich Court and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail.
