Chenango's unemployment rate up
NORWICH – Chenango County’s 8.2 percent unemployment rate in December edged closer to matching a record 8.3 percent, set back in 1994, and exceeded both the state’s and the nation’s for a second month in a row.
According to data released Thursday by the state Labor Department, of the county’s 24,500 resident labor force, 2,000 people were unemployed last month, 400 more than in November.
The county lost 200 private sector jobs throughout 2008. Most of the jobs lost in December were in the leisure and hospitality sectors while jobs lost through the year were in the service and trade, transportation and utilities industries.
New York State’s unemployment rate increased from 6 percent in November 2008 to 7 percent in December 2008 - its highest level since 1994. The nation’s rate is 7.1 percent.
A mid-month tally in December showed 855 individuals in Chenango who collected unemployment insurance benefits, up 47.4 percent from a year ago, said Christian Harris, senior economist at the state Labor Department in Union. The number compares to 580 who were receiving benefits in 2007.
“More than likely, we are going to see more of the same continue over the year with jobs losses and higher unemployment rates. It’s going to be tough to see ... we are really going to have to see where the nation goes as a whole before we can find some firm footing,” Harris said.
New York State’s private sector job loss was the largest over-the-month drop in employment since October 2001 in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks. Since the beginning of the national recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed New Yorkers has increased by more than 50 percent.
