Arbor Day Posters win awards from Tree Board
OXFORD – “Trees are Terrific… in Cities and Towns!” was the theme of the 2009 Arbor Day poster contest which students of Oxford Academy’s 5th grade recently participated in. The Oxford Village Tree Board sponsored the contest on the local level of the 2009 National Arbor Day Poster Contest, sponsored by Toyota. Three winners were announced on Jan. 16 by Tree Board representatives, Gray Stevens, Jeanie Petersen and John Godfrey. To show their appreciation to the fourteen students who entered, they had a little “Arbor Day-style” celebration.
Back in October 2008, in preparation for the contest, Kathleen Hansen, the Oxford Middle School Principal, gave the new Art Instructor, Charity Gipp, an Arbor Day Foundation lesson plan. It was centered on the theme, “Trees Are Terrific…in Cities and Towns!” with activities about the importance of tree diversity in a community. Activities also correlated with National Science, Geography, and Art Standards. All the students had a good time learning about trees and creating great posters.
After a difficult jurying process by the Tree Board, three place winners were selected then, on January 16th, announced in Charity Gipp’s art room. They are: in third place: Adriana Rheinheimer; in second place: Angelo Gonzalez; and in first place: Misty Johnson.
As a reward for all the art students’ hard work, John Godfrey, Gray Stevens and Jeanie Petersen, of the Oxford Village Tree Board, had a small Arbor Day party with pine tree shaped chocolate cakes, baked by Marian Godfrey. In addition, the art students were promised a pizza party on the following Friday, compliments of their principal. The fourteen students who had entered 12” x 19” posters in the 2009 National Arbor Day contest are: Carly Bates, Cydnee Beam, Angelo Gonzalez, Tiger Gould, Aimee Greenman, Cherrie Houck, Misty Johnson, Robert Meek, Erin Redfield, Adriana Rheinheimer, Donald Stevens, Bryan Towndrow, Marcus Vigus and Terry Whitmore.
The three place winners will be receiving prizes by the Oxford Village Tree Board at the Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, April 25 at 9 a.m. in the LaFayette Park bandstand. Principal Hansen said that she would accompany the students in the Park that morning and organize a tree poetry reading and possibly an Arbor Day rap song. All of the posters will be on exhibit in the entertainment and art venue, 6 On The Square that morning too.
Misty Johnson’s poster has now been entered in the State level of the National Arbor Day Poster Contest. If it’s a state winner, Misty will be going to Albany to receive her award, and the poster will move up to the next level of the contest.
