Ford murder trial begins today

NORWICH – Opening arguments in the bench trial of Accused child murderer George Ford Jr. began this morning.
Ford waived his right to a jury trial and has instead elected to place his fate in the hands of Broome County Court Judge Joseph F. Cawley.
District Attorney Joseph A. McBride claims Ford is guilty of the second degree murder his 12-year-old baby-sitter, Shyanne A. Somers of South Otselic.
Ford appeared at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich at 5 a.m. on July 8, 2007 with the body of the 12-year-old in his pick-up truck. He told police he had accidentally driven over Shyanne while he was showing her his horses five hours earlier, at around midnight.
Ford said he was too shocked by the condition of her body to move it for over an hour and became lost on his way to the hospital in Norwich, resulting in a five-hour delay between the time of the accident and authorities being alerted.
Chenango County Sheriff Thomas J. Loughren claims Ford’s story contradicts information his department uncovered, and a grand jury indicted Ford with the girl’s murder in August 2007.
Police said they uncovered a GPS tracking system in Ford’s truck, which his wife admitted she had placed there without his knowledge because she believed him to be having an affair. Investigators said the tracking device recorded the time, speed and location of the vehicle at the time of the girl’s death.
Ford’s attorney, Randel Scharf of Cooperstown, recently defended convicted murderer Peter M. Wlasiuk. A jury found Wlasiuk guilty for the second degree murder of his wife in September and he was sentenced to the maximum of 25 years to life.
