Man allegedly bilks worker’s comp for $60,000
AFTON – An Afton man was arrested by state investigators last week for allegedly collecting worker’s compensation benefits he was not entitled to for nearly 13 years.
The Feb. 4 arrest of 59-year-old Edward J. Panus of Afton came after a six-month investigation by the New York State Insurance Frauds Bureau and the New York State Police in Sidney.
Panus was charged with 13 counts of first degree offering a false instrument for filing (E Felony), and one count of committing a fraudulent practice under the Worker’s Compensation Law (E Felony). Panus could face up to a maximum of four years in state prison for each charge.
Police said Panus submitted false information in his work activity report to the New York State Insurance Fund so he could intentionally obtain compensation benefits he knew he was not entitled to.
Police also said their investigation revealed that Panus opened his own business called Ponderosa Fish Farms in 1996 and never reported the additional income.
District Attorney Joseph McBride said Panus had wrongfully obtained “approximately 60,000 dollars over a period of time.”
Panus was arraigned in the Town of Afton Court, and remanded to Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear at 6 tonight in the Town of Afton Court.
