Youth Bureau skating party attracts crowd
NORWICH – The City of Norwich Youth Bureau collaborated with the Chenango Health Network and Reality Check’s Tobacco Free Chenango program to bring a community skating party to Norwich on Saturday, and with over 200 people in attendance, a good time was had by all.
The Youth Bureau took advantage of this year’s cold weather to sponsor a Community Skating Party. In previous years, the weather has kept the skate park from being open for much of the winter, but this year’s cold weather has kept ice on the rink and kept the skate park as a popular family destination.
Children and adults from the community were invited to come to the Borden Avenue Skating Facility from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday to take part in a day of free skating, which included music, food, snacks, drinks and even the opportunity to take home some fun prizes.
Norwich Mayor Joseph Maiurano listed the City Youth Bureau as one of the city’s quality of life offerings. “These are the reasons people want to live in this area,” Maiurano said. The mayor explained that of the 208 children in attendance at Saturday’s skate party, many were from areas outside of Norwich. “People came from all over. It’s great to see the work that people did to have these kids involved,” Maiurano said.
Annually, the City of Norwich Youth Bureau provides free programs for children in the City of Norwich as well as the towns of Norwich, North Norwich Preston, Plymouth and Pharsalia. In the summer, the Youth Bureau offers programs like swimming lessons, soccer and tennis. In the winter, programs like gymnastics, wrestling, baseball and bowling are offered. In addition, the Borden Ave. Skating Facility is open for ice skating in the winter months as well as in-line skating and skateboarding in the summer at no charge.
Youth Bureau activities are funded in part by the New York State office of Children and Family. For more information, contact City Youth Bureau Director Robert Mason at the Youth Bureau office 334-1206 or visit the web site at www.norwichnewyork.net/plan/youth.html.
