Norwich 63, Owego 28
NORWICH – Owego gave Norwich all it could handle in the first meeting this season on the Indians’ home court. There was no such trouble for the Purple Tuesday evening as the host club brought home a lopsided win on senior recognition night.
David Carson paced three NHS players in double figures scoring 15 points. Corey Dietrich added 12, and Vaughn Labor 11 for the Tornado (16-2), who stretched their winning streak to seven games.
“Early on down there, they hit some threes and had a little run going,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “We were conscious tonight of (Kevin) Kie and (Harley) Edwards, and having a hand in their faces all night. We did a good job of that.
“We played really good at both ends of the floor. Defensively, there were not many good looks for them at all, and we dominated the boards.”
Norwich shook the Indians early in the second quarter. Leading 15-9, NHS senior Timmy Clark hit a three-pointer from the left wing with 5:59 left in the opening half, and those three points ignited a 19-3 spurt to end the quarter.
Dietrich had six points during the run and Labor four points. Four other Norwich players contributed to the scoring barrage.
“Offensively, we didn’t settle for jump shots and we made the extra pass,” Abbott said. “We looked for each other...it was a really good night.”
Norwich will host a STAC semifinal game Tuesday night. “We’re heading toward the money games,” Abbott said. “All we have left are league playoffs and sectionals. That’s where you want to be playing your best. We’re at the point where it can end at any time, and we want to keep going.”
Notes: In the junior varsity game, Norwich improved to 8-10 on the season with a 62-60 overtime win. Jon Foulds led the Tornado with 25 points... .Senior basketball players recognized were Labor, Dietrich, Clark, Carson, Cory Law, and Brian Wightman, who has missed the entire season due to injury... .Prior to the contest, Abbott was honored for winning his 300th career game. The 23-year NHS mentor picked up the milestone win Jan. 15 at Susquehanna Valley. On hand to support Abbott’s accomplishments and present him with a plaque were several current and former Norwich coaches, along with retired director of athletics, Jack Jones. “I think I was the only one who didn’t know about this,” Abbott joked. “I love teaching and coaching for Norwich, and for them to return the favor to me tonight was meaningful.” With Wednesday’s win, Abbott now has a career record of 305-193.
