Relay season begins again
CHENANGO COUNTY – Although snow is still on the ground and winter weather remains in the air, the time has come to begin preparations for the annual Chenango County Relay for Life.
The 2009 Relay will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 17 and end at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 18. While the event is still five months away, the Relay for Life Committee will begin planning for it next week, and the first event-wide fundraiser will be held soon after.
According to the Relay for Life web site, “Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.” Teams of people raise money for the event and take turns walking or running around a track. The money raised during the event is used to fund cancer research, patient and family programs, advocacy and health education, since many forms of cancer are avoidable with lifestyle changes.
On Wednesday, Feb. 24, team captains will meet at the Norwich Campus of Morrisville State to discuss plans for the 2009 Relay, which will include a celebration of 25 years of Relay for Life.
On Saturday, Feb. 28, the Relay Committee has scheduled their first event-wide fundraiser. For the second year in a row, the Relay Committee will begin their fundraising campaign with a bowling event at Plaza Lanes in Norwich. The “Strike Out Cancer” fundraiser will be held from noon until the bowling alley closes on Saturday. Proceeds from games, shoe rentals, food and drink sales throughout the day will benefit this year’s Relay for Life.
“We’re really trying to promote this, as this is our second year,” said event co-chair Marie DeSarro. “We’d like to see more people come out to support it.” While the fundraiser is being put on by the Relay Committee, DeSarro explained, teams are welcome to come and hold fundraisers of their own during the bowling event as well. The committee is extending an open invitation to families, groups of friends or co-workers, and bowlers of all skill levels to come out in support of Relay for Life.
In 2008, the Chenango County Relay for Life raised over $125,600 for the American Cancer Society. In Chenango’s 12-year Relay for Life history, the event has raised over $1 million.
