Greene suffers first loss in MAC championship

ONEONTA – Harpursville not only ended Greene’s unbeaten run through the season, but unseated the Trojans as Midstate Athletic Conference champions.
Hannah Kimmel scored 26 points and pulled down 20 rebounds for the Hornets, who rallied from 18 points down to defeat Greene at SUNY Oneonta Saturday, 55-52.
The Hornets (17-3) were 11-for-13 from the foul line in the last quarter – all from Kimmel and her cousin Alycia Kimmel – to hold off Greene.
“It’s a disappointing loss, but it doesn’t take away from the ultimate goal, which is a sectional title,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “I think the girls will come back with more determination.”
Greene opened its season with a 50-45 win over the Hornets, and in that game it was playing catch-up most of the second half.
About 2 1/2 months later, it was a case of role reversal. Greene scored the first eight points of the game until a Kimmel three ball put her team on the board.
Liz Wentlent hit two early threes for Greene, Barb Borst drained three hoops, and Megan McDermott added five points in a prolific 20-12 first quarter. The Trojans picked up steam in the second quarter starting it on a 14-4 run.
Erin Smith and Wentlent hit three balls and scored five points during the salvo upping the margin to 34-16 with 2:04 left in the half.
Marisa Wickham’s putback basket helped Harpursville regroup, and Alycia Kimmel’s basket at the end of the half pulled her team within 34-23.
“I don’t think we relaxed with the lead, we just sort of lost momentum,” Gorton said. “We became too conservative, and offensively, we didn’t have the same zeal taking the ball to the basket.”
The end of the half was disappointing for Greene, the entire third quarter was a disaster. The Trojans scored just three points in the quarter on 1-for-14 shooting.
Meanwhile, Harpursville not only climbed back into the game, but grabbed the lead by the end of the quarter. Hannah Kimmel scored nine in the quarter and Alycia Kimmel eight. Alycia Kimmel’s three ball at the quarter’s horn gave her club the lead for the first time. “It was our worst offensive quarter of the season, by far,” Gorton said. “We just lost track of Alycia Kimmel, and they absolutely killed us on the offensive boards.”
Greene tied the contest once in the fourth quarter on Borst’s driving layup with 6:04 to play. Hannah Kimmel hit a short two-pointer in the paint to break the tie, and Alycia Kimmel added two free throws to move the margin back to four points.
“The only positive is that we still have a chance at redemption,” Gorton said. “Any loss that does not end your season is not the worst thing. If we can win three in a row, we can still be sectional champions, and that’s our ultimate goal.”
McDermott scored 14 points for Greene (19-1), Wentlent added 12, and Borst 11.
