Peet explodes in final minute to claim section title
BINGHAMTON – Tyler Peet was less than a minute from losing his third match of the year, and in this, the Section IV, Division I finals, it could quite possibly be his season-ending defeat.
Needing to make something happen, the 135-pound Unadilla Valley junior did so in explosive fashion.
Peet worked through an escape with 40 seconds left against Johnson City’s Josh Halladay to cut a 2-0 deficit in half, got his takedown for the lead, and turned Halladay to his back with a half nelson as he took the JC wrestler down for a five-point move in a 6-2 win. It gave Peet a second straight sectional championship and third straight appearance in the New York State Tournament.
“Tyler was wrestling well throughout the tournament, and the finals was easily his worst match,” said UV coach Jim DuVall. “They (Halladay) controlled tempo until the last 40 seconds, then Tyler got his stuff going.”
Neither wrestler scored in the opening period, but Halladay fashioned a reversal after choosing bottom to start the second period, and he rode Peet out for well over a minute. Halladay looked like he might ride Peet out the entire third period as well and secure an upset victory. “Halladay was really good on top. They were working hard and we were sloppy until we got it together. Tyler got a leg out and was able to turn and face (Halladay),” DuVall said.
Peet, named the Division I most outstanding wrestler, was one of six Chenango County wrestlers winning titles and automatic bids to the state tourney this weekend in Albany at the Times-Union Arena.

B-G/Afton
Wayne Cirigliano (112) and Danny Gormley (119) came through with championship performances. Cirigliano won his second straight title pinning Chenango Valley’s Dustin Greene in 3:31. Gormley, who was out of action at the Class B Tournament, showed no rust in winning a third straight title defeating Tioga’s Corey Spires, 10-0.
Victor Coronado, a returning sectional champion and state place-winner, lost a 3-2 decision to Brian Sewalt of Waverly. It was Coronado’s second loss in as many week’s to the Wolverines grappler. Coronado, though, is perhaps as good a bet as any in Section IV to receive a wild-card entry into the state tourney.
Greene
Nick Wilcox (125) made it four straight sectional titles, while Tyler Beckwith (171) three-peated in leading Greene to a runner-up finish in overall team scoring behind Waverly. Wilcox pinned CV’s Adam Greene in 5:31, and Beckwith was more dominant in a return meeting with Walton’s Cody Reed. Beckwith cruised to an 8-2 victory.
Brock Kiddy (103) and Keegan Cerwinski (152) finished second.
Norwich
The Tornado placed 10th out of 25 teams in Division II with four kids placing among the top five. Tanner Cummings (103), just a freshman, dropped a tight decision in the semifinals to Greene’s Brock Kiddy, but wrestled back for third. Kiddy built a substantial early lead, but Cummings scored a reversal and back points to close to within 8-6, the final score.
Senior Michael Hull (125), in arguably the toughest weight class, finished fourth in his class, and compiled a 32-11 season record. “I could see any one of six guys winning in Michael’s weight class,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “He avenged a couple of losses and wrestled well.”
Keegan Levesque (171), also a freshman, wrestled back well to place fourth and to end his season on a high note. Cameron Turner, just a sophomore, was fifth at 140 pounds.
Sherburne-Earlville
It was a disappointing day for the Marauders in Utica Saturday, who had no wrestler place better than fifth at the Section III, Division II tournament.
Greg DuVall, a returning sectional champion, led S-E with a fifth-place finish at 125 pounds. Tyi Franklin (96) and Spencer Franklin (103) were sixth, as was two-time defending sectional champion Chris Pike (285). Pike lost to Cato-Meridan’s Austin Lee in the semifinals, 5-1, a young man he had beaten the previous two years. In wrestlebacks, Pike injured his knee in losing his second match, then defaulted in the fifth-sixth consolation round.
Unadilla Valley
Senior Justin Peek blossomed in what was his final high school tournament placing third at 189 pounds. Seeded fifth, he pinned Jake DuBois of Chenango Forks in 3:59. DuBois had beaten Peek earlier in the tournament.
Elsewhere, Todd Wilcox added a fourth-place finish at 152 pounds for the Storm.
