Norwich educator earns state scholarship
ALBANY – The New York State Council of School Superintendents has awarded scholarships, in the amount of $2,500 to Kistin Giglio of the Norwich City Schools (attending SUNY Cortland with a major in Educational Administration) and Kusum Sinha of the Croton-Harmon School District (attending St. John’s University, majoring in Educational Leadership) at the Council’s recent Mid-Winter Conference.
These annual scholarships began in 1998 to show commitment to minorities and women interested in entering the field of educational administration and are awarded to candidates enrolled in a graduate study program through which the School District Administrator Certificate or Doctoral Degree may be awarded.
The awards were presented by The Pathways to Leadership for Minorities and Women Committee Co-Chairs Fadhilika Atiba-Weza, Superintendent of Troy City Schools and Margaret Keller-Cogan, Superintendent of Clarkstown CSD along with Clark J. Godshall, Council President/District Superintendent- Orleans-Niagara BOCES and New York State Education Commissioner Richard Mills.
The Council, a professional and advocacy organization with 700+ members that has served the school superintendents of New York State for more than a century, met in Albany in mid- January to explore the theme of “A Leadership Imperative: Innovation & Creativity Focused on Student Results.” Keynote presentations included Alan Blankstein, President, HOPE Foundation; Stan Slap, CEO, slap; and Dr. Mary Montle Bacon, President, Images of Culture. In addition to the keynote series, the event featured workshops, practice-oriented sessions, special events for superintendents who are new to the field, and sessions with NYS Education Commissioner Richard Mills and invited educational legislative leaders.
