Ice and fire cause Afton home to be lost

AFTON – Monday evening what started as a chimney fire swept through a remote Afton home, causing significant damage and making the structure a total loss.
“It was a battle of the elements,” said Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matthew L. Beckwith.
Beckwith said the 50 firefighters from Afton, Coventry, Greene, Bainbridge, Harpursville, Sidney, Masonville and Hancock had to struggle to reach the residence of Ronnie Ford along Howe Lane in the Town of Afton. The house was located approximately 1,900 feet from the road.
Beckwith said crews had used heavy five inch diameter hose to reach the blaze down the narrow, private road. Crews also had to march to the site from the road in below freezing weather that caused complications, including a hose line break and one of the fire trucks freezing.
“It was very very cold, creating challenges with the equipment and the scene was difficult to reach. The Afton fire chief, Blaine Reiling, was even shuttling firefighters back and forth from the road in the department’s Suburban,” said Beckwith.
Beckwith said Ford and a friend were watching television when the TV suddenly went out.
“He then went to investigate the cause and smelled smoke,” he said.
Ford discovered flames coming from one of his vents and snatched a nearby fire extinguisher to fight the blaze while his friend dialed 911, Beckwith said.
When firefighters arrived, the ceiling of the home and roof were already ablaze.
Firefighters were unable to save the residence but Beckwith reported that many of the homeowner’s belongings were saved by fire crews. Crews left the scene as daylight was about to break at around 6 a.m. Wednesday.
No one was injured in the fire and the occupants were taken in by relatives.
The Plymouth Fire Department and Norwich Fire Department also responded to a small house fire at around 10 p.m. Monday along Reservoir Hill Road in the Town of Plymouth.
“A home owner operating a wood stove in his basement placed a wet piece of wood on his stove to attempt to dry it out a little but forget he had left it there until the home began filling with smoke,” said Beckwith.
By the time crews arrived at the scene, the occupants managed to put out the stove fire with a fire extinguisher.
No one was injured and the home suffered some smoke damage.
