Melting snow, rain causes potential for flooding
CHENANGO COUNTY – While Chenango County has been enjoying the first taste of spring weather, melting snow and rain across the area could cause potential flooding in some areas of the county.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a flood watch for Chenango and the surrounding areas. According to the NWS, “the rain that has fallen in the last 24 hours could lead to additional flooding along already swollen area rivers, streams and creeks.”
While the flood watch has been issued for all of Chenango County, some areas are more likely to see flooding. The NWS said a flood warning has been issued for the Chenango River at Sherburne, where flooding is even more of a possibility.
“Tonight, the river is expected to reach flood stage in Sherburne and go down from there,” said Emergency Management Officer A. Jones. At flood stage, Jones explained, the river will cause little to no damage, mostly flooding the fields around its banks. However, further rain forecast for later in the week could continue to cause problems.
“Right now, we have our eye on another storm system that could impact the region Tuesday night and Wednesday,” Jones said. Depending on how much rain the storm system brings, the potential for flooding later in the week could be worse.
“If we get one inch of precipitation or more, there could be more problems,” Jones said, explaining that the flooding would not necessarily be contained to the Sherburne area.
