Ag celebration to ring in spring

NORWICH – Chenango County will herald in spring by celebrating the many contributions of our largest local industry. A resolution adopted Monday by the county board of supervisors has designated March 20, the first day of spring, as National Agriculture Day in Chenango County.
“It is only fitting and proper that recognition be given to farmers who, on a daily basis, provide the food and fiber of America,” stated the resolution, which was put forward by Chairman Richard Decker.
National Agriculture Day is an annual initiative by the Agriculture Council of America. The purpose, according to Chenango County Farm Bureau President Bradd Vickers, is to “honor agriculture for providing safe, abundant and affordable products; a strong economy; a source of renewable energy and a world of job opportunities.”
Vickers, who was on hand to receive the proclamation, announced that his organization will be hosting a luncheon in honor of National Ag Day March 20 at The Silo Restaurant in Coventry. The event will begin with a reception at 11:30 a.m. followed by a program on renewable energy at noon.
“The focus this year is ‘Sowing the Seeds Today for our Energy Needs Tomorrow,’” explained Vickers.
The farm advocate has lined up a number of speakers who will address the use of marginal land to produce renewable energy crops. Topics will include the production of heat pellets from wood and grass and fuels made from rapeseed, soybeans and sunflower seeds. According to Vickers, the byproducts of these processes can be used as feed, thus reducing the overall costs of production.
