Flooding not expected to be problem for area

CHENANGO COUNTY – Despite the continuous flood watches and warnings seen in the last few days, today’s rain showers are not expected to cause serious problems for the area.
Emergency Management Officer A. Jones said at this point, the Chenango County area is in good shape. “There’s not enough rain forecast to cause a problem,” Jones said. Earlier in the week, Jones had said the area could experience flooding today depending on the amount of rain fall we receive; however, with the heaviest rainfall taking place to the north of us, flooding is unlikely to occur in most areas.
The Chenango River at Sherburne was one of the few areas to see a flood warning; however, Jones said currently at that location, the river is below seven feet. Flood stage is eight feet. “Monday, it reached 8.3 feet,” Jones said. “It isn’t forecast to go any higher than that today.” At that height, the water would flood the banks and fields around the river.
