Greene plays state opponent that has familiar look to it

By Greene head coach Dave Gorton’s best approximation, his team’s state regional playoff opponent Saturday is not that dissimilar to the club his Trojans beat for the Section IV title last weekend.
Greene (22-1), the number six ranked Class C school in New York, plays number eight Bishop Grimes Saturday at 2:45 p.m. at SUNY Cortland.
The Trojans advanced with a comfortable 15-point victory over Odessa-Montour behind a career-high 29 points from senior Barb Borst.
The Cobras defeated state-ranked Mohawk for the Section III Class C-2 title, then upended Little Falls last Saturday, 42-32, in the Section III crossover championship.
“They have an inside-outside attack,” Gorton said, who cribbed notes on the Cobras from reliable sources who have seen Grimes play. “There are three guards who like to shoot the three, and they have a post player who averages in double figures. In some ways they are a lot like Odessa-Montour, but it’s still hard to compare.”
Like it did against O-M, Greene will match the Cobras’ quick, outside guards with a sizable advantage up front. 5-foot-9 guard Lizzy Wentlent typically checks the opponent’s best guard, while fellow guards Erin Smith and Barb Borst take the wings. Borst and Smith did an excellent job shutting off the passing lanes, and Borst finished with three steals against the Indians.
“I think they’re going to test us,” Gorton said. “They have some quick kids, but we have some quick kids playing against our starters, and I think that will help us.”
Bishop Grimes used the long-range three to defeat Mohawk burying a school-record 12. The Cobras followed that with a completely different tack to defeat Little Falls. Making just two threes, Bishop Grimes limited Little Falls to just 16 points through three quarters in building a double figures lead.
“They pride themselves on defense,” Gorton said. “They’re a team that wants to force turnovers, and our focus is to be strong with the ball.”
The winner of Saturday’s contest advances to the state semifinals at Hudson Valley Community College next weekend.
