Teen dance club to open Friday
NORWICH – When Dave and Melissa Thomas first moved to Norwich, they noticed there wasn’t a lot for teenage kids to do on the weekends. Given their history as club owners in the Denver area, they decided to do something to fix that.
On Friday, the couple will host the grand opening of The Warehouse, an alcohol-free dance club for middle school aged children and up. “We had a couple of clubs in Denver, and we wanted to do it here in Norwich,” Dave Thomas said. “Kids need something here.”
The Warehouse is located at 16 American Ave. in Norwich, at the former site of The Sleep Shop. Dave used his experience in construction to turn the building from a storefront and office space into an open area with a dance floor, game area, seating space and a snack bar. Thomas said he has been working on the building for the last six weeks, and with only a few days left before the grand opening, he said there is not a lot left to do.
Given his experience owning and operating clubs, Thomas said he wants to promote The Warehouse as a safe, fun experience for teens. He expects to operate with a nightly staff of 10 employees, and hopes to include a police officer in the list of employees. “We just want to cut off the problems before they can start,” Thomas said. “Having a cop here is the best insurance policy we could have.”
The business owner explained he has a zero tolerance policy for drugs, alcohol and violence. Thomas explained that people will be searched as they enter, as a precaution. “We want this to be a safe environment. I’m a parent with my own son,” he explained.
Dave and Melissa plan to open the club this Friday and operate with two shifts per night. On Fridays, the club will be open for middle school students through age 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. From 9 p.m. on, the club will be open for those age 17 and over. On Saturday nights, the younger crowd will be welcome from 7:30 to 10:30. From 10:30 on, the club will be open to those 17 and over. Admission will cost $5 for the younger group and $10 for the older crowd. Drinks, snacks and games will be available on a cash basis.
For now, Thomas said he plans to keep the club open on Fridays and Saturdays only, but as summer draws closer, he may open the club four nights a week. Once the club opens, Thomas said he wants to keep making changes and additions to the business as he progresses. “We’re going to have a suggestion box and if the suggestions are affordable and feasible, it’s not a problem,” Thomas said.
The Warehouse will open at 6:30 on Friday night.
