Norwich junior wrestling team completes successful season

NORWICH – The Norwich junior wrestling team completed another exciting and successful season earlier this month.

The team participated in 14 tournaments and averaged 24 kids at each tourney. “I am very pleased with the participation this year at the tournaments,” said head coach Tim Scheer. “We had 78 kids sign up in November of last year, and ended with about 58 kids at the season-ending tournament March 13. That’s a long time to keep a bunch of 5- to 12-year-olds interested in one thing.”

Scheer said the Norwich Junior Dual Meet tournament held at the Norwich YMCA drew many good reviews from visiting teams and wrestlers. “The tourney was a big success and it will definitely grow in the years to come,” the Norwich coach said. “Our 30th annual tournament at the Norwich High School was also a big success. We had over 320 wrestlers from all over the Northeast participate.”

At this year’s junior state tournament held at Union-Endicott High School, Norwich sent eight junior wrestlers, and four came home with top-six place finishes. “The tournament was great to see and have in our area,” Scheer said. “It’s usually held closer to New York City, and not many kids make the trek from Norwich.”
