Sherburne Earlville adopts budget with increase of 3.9 percent

SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville Board of Education adopted the budget for the 2009/2010 school year this week, calling for a total spending increase of 3.9 percent.
On Monday, the board adopted the budget of $27,833,948. That’s an increase of $1,270,734 from last year’s budget of $26,563,214. The budget will require a total tax levy of $6,254,983, an increase of 2.9 percent from last year. For the last few years, the district has had a tax levy increase of around 3.95 percent.
Assistant Superintendent Thomas Strain explained that despite the economy, Sherburne-Earlville did not cut any programs to keep the budget low. “We’re not making any drastic cuts,” he said.
One factor that helped keep the costs down was the retirement of some members of the instructional staff. Strain explained that four veteran teachers will be retiring in June and those positions will not be filled. In salaries and benefits, the reduction of those four positions will save the district approximately $290,000. “That change keeps our overall increase in instructional salaries – by far, the biggest budget item – below three percent,” Strain said.
Other savings include a decreased projected fuel cost, stabilized retirement costs and the lowest health insurance premium increase in years.
“We are not instituting any new programs, nor are we cutting any existing programs,” Strain said.
The board will hold its budget hearing at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 11 in the middle school / high school auditorium. The budget vote will be held the following week from noon until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19 in the elementary school foyer and in the auditorium entrance of the middle school / high school.
