Fire Department keeps Norwich chimney fire damage minimal
NORWICH – The Norwich Fire Department responded to a chimney fire in the Town of Norwich Tuesday night, putting the flames out before they could cause any significant damage to the residence.
At 9:35 p.m., Norwich fire crews responded to a call of a wood stove chimney fire at 229 Hale Road. The fire caused minimal damage to the wall and structure surrounding the stainless steel chimney.
No injures were reported.
City of Norwich Fire Marshall and Code Enforcement Officer Jason Lawrence said people should regularly have their chimneys checked by a professional at the start of every winter season and should have multiple checks during the year.
“It was just your typical chimney fire. It extended into the partition of the wall and some of the wood caught on fire,” said Lawrence.
“These things just sometimes happen, even when people take all the precautions. But you can reduce the chances it’ll happen to you, if you just take the little extra time to have it regularly checked. It’s better than the alternative,” he said.
Lawrence said if people have questions about cleaning their chimney or any concerns regarding home fire safety, they should contact their local or county fire officials for advice.
