Report of gunshots leads police on wild goose chase
NORWICH – At around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, police received an emergency call from business on Hale Street in the Town of Norwich reporting that a white male in a black SUV was firing a rifle from his vehicle.
Over half a dozen Chenango County Sheriff and Norwich Police Department patrol vehicles responded to the scene, arriving less than five minutes after dispatchers alerted law enforcement in the area. Police have made no arrest in the incident.
The caller told police that the gunshot originated from the city’s side of the Chenango River along the greenbelt, the dirt service road leading along the river behind the Norwich High School.
After arriving at the scene, investigators said other than the eyewitness reports, they could not confirm a shot had actually been fired.
Police said they believe the target of the shooting was water foul taking refuge in the river.
The Department of Environmental Conservation has allowed a special hunting season for geese in some parts of upstate New York this spring from March 11 to April 15.
The special conservation order was approved by the state last year in an attempt to manage an overabundance in the local goose population.
