Hurricanes claim Sidney AAU title

SIDNEY – The Norwich Hurricanes’ boys’ basketball team kicked of their 2009 AAU season in fine fashion finishing 4-0, while also winning the 17-and-under bracket at this past weekend’s April Fool’s Ambush in Sidney.

In the ‘Canes’ only game on Sunday, they defeated the Indians, a team composed of players from the Southern Tier, 57-37, in a matchup of pool play winners.

Josh Borfitz topped the Hurricanes with 13 points, and he was capably assited by Seth Thomsen’s 11 markers. Jon Foulds added nine points, Richie Bonney and Casey Edwards eight each, and Derek Hughes chipped in with half a dozen. The champions were greated aided by 23-for-29 shooting from the foul line.

“Great ball movement and tremendous team defense,” was how Hurricanes head coach Mark Abbott summed up the title tilt. “They had a tremendous size advantage, but our effort was far superior. We never backed down and never gave in.”
