Attendance at vaccine clinics steady
NORWICH – Data collected at recent vaccination clinics held at the County Office Building prove that more people were served in the county’s seat than at clinics held over the same time period last year in remote locations.
The Chenango County Public Health Department collected the information from surveys taken at the Norwich clinics from January to March. The surveys are part of a plan that would discontinue periodic immunization clinics in McDonough, New Berlin, Greene, Bainbridge, Afton, South Otselic and Oxford.
“The numbers show that we are pulling people in,” said Nursing Services Director Marianne Kirsch. “There were no complaints when we surveyed people (about having to travel).”
Town supervisors from Afton, Smyrna and New Berlin had previously scrutinized what the county department characterized as an attempt to be more efficient. Instead of ending the service and asking people to travel, they suggested setting patient appointment times and scaling back the number of nurses at the locations.
Kirsch said fewer people were coming to off-site clinics in outlying towns because of new school-based clinics, and that nurses were often waiting idle for walk-ins.
Individuals may walk in or make appointments at the day-long clinics held on the first floor of the County Office Building.
During a meeting of Heath and Human Services Tuesday, Afton Supervisor Robert Briggs commented that the tough economic times must be a hardship for young families on social services.
“This county is all about providing services to people. We need to keep a handle on if kids and parents are getting what they need,” he said.
According to Kirsch, only 40 to 50 percent of children under 5 in the county are fully immunized. She said the department would continue to identify the population not covered. Discontinuing remote clinics is “not set in stone,” she said.
