Three-peat for Baldwin and Associates
NORWICH – Leigh Baldwin and Associates finished third in the regular season standings, but ended the Norwich YMCA Men’s Corporate Basketball League in the same position as the previous two years.
By virtue of 20-for-23 foul shooting in the second half, Baldwin and Associates pulled away from Burrell’s Excavating in the championship game Monday night, 61-43.
It was the third straight league championship victory for Baldwin, who went unbeaten the previous two seasons.
Locked in a tie game at halftime with Burrell’s, LBA’s Tim Mirabito scored three early hoops in the second half to give his team the early advantage.
Matt Foote had 13 of his 22 points in the second half, and a driving layup cut the margin to 35-32 with eight minutes to play. On the next sequence, LBA re-established command when Brian Collier stepped into a three-pointer from the top of the key, and buried the trifecta to double the margin.
Collier went 14-for-16 from the foul line in the second half, most of those attempts coming when Burrell’s was in desperation mode. Collier finished with a team-high 22 points, Mirabito scored 14 in the second half including 6-of-7 from the foul line to wind up with 18, and Josh Morris added 12 points for the winning club.
Burrell’s grabbed a 7-2 lead at the outset and extended the lead to 22-14 with six minutes left in the first half after a Nick Brunick three-pointer.
LBA finished the half on an 8-0 run to tie the game. Mirabito had two put-back baskets, Chris Maynard banked in a layup after an offensive rebound, and Pat Flanagan tied the game with a minute left in the half nailing a 15-footer from the foul line.
Leigh Baldwin and Associates reached the finals with a two-point win over Evening Sun/Manpower last Thursday, while Burrell’s advanced after defeating Haddad Construction by 11 last Thursday as well.
