Eaton Airport cuts jobs, weekend services
NORTH NORWICH – Two employees were layed off and the hours of operation were slashed on April 1st at the Lt. Warren E. Eaton/Chenango County Airport.
Gamma Aviation Airport Manager James Baciuska said the airport would shut down fueling, parking and maintenance services on the weekends.
“I think the industry as a whole is seeing a downturn. There’s no doubt,” he said.
One part-time and one full-time workers were let go. Baciuska said pilots would be free to land and take-off as before on the weekends, but must make appointments for services.
The county’s airport in North Norwich has already weathered losses in jet traffic from Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals and other corporations in the region. The Cincinnati-based pharmaceutical company announced in June 2007 that it would close down operations over a two-year period.
Chenango County Airport Administrator Donald MacIntosh also confirmed that New York Central Mutual transferred its jet to another airport on April 1.
MacIntosh blamed the downturn on comments made in January by the Obama Administration. The President chastised automobile executives for flying to Washington, D.C. in their private jets to ask for federal stimulus money.
“There’s been a tremendous downturn just because of the attitude of the administration. It’s made quite a difference. It’s a reflection on how they do business, and all companies have backed off on flying,” he said.
Last year, county lawmakers were awarded federal aviation grants for a 10-year airport improvement plan update as well as t-hanger site preparation work. Up-to-date statistics on airport take-offs and landings last year were unavailable.
