NEW BERLIN – Casey Mohrein and Mike Muller combined on a two-hitter for unbeaten Afton (5-0), and the Crimson Knights opened up a tight game with four runs in the fifth inning.
With two outs, Afton drew back-to-back walks in the fifth. Jake Arnold drove in the first two runs with a bloop single to right field making it 4-1.
Mohrein had eight strikeouts in the game, and he along with Muller totaled 11 whiffs and just one base on balls. “As soon as (Mohrein) got comfortable throwing his curveball over the plate, we were off balance and didn’t put good swings on the ball,” said UV coach Tom Locke.
Arnold and Corey Mohrein had two hits apiece.
Justin Peek had both of UV’s basehits.

BAINBRIDGE – B-G avenged a 15-0 opening-day loss to Sidney getting a game-winning homer in the seventh from Paul Parsons.
Parson’s shot to right-center made B-G starter Dustin Rutz a winner. Rutz finished with nine strikeouts, no walks, and he scattered six Sidney basehits.
“We’re still sorting out our pitching, and once we figure it out, we won’t have the yo-yo effect,” said B-G coach Pete Mansheffer. B-G split its four games with two tight wins against two shutout losses. “Rutz did a nice job, and defensively we made some great plays behind him.”
Parsons and Rutz had two hits apiece. Danny Gormley had one hit, two walks, two stolen bases, and one RBI from the leadoff slot.
Steve McKown had two hits for Sidney.

SHERBURNE – Playing its first game in a week and a half, Sherburne-Earlville committed six errors in the first inning to fall behind by four runs, and never recovered to drop to 1-1 on the season.
The Marauders made up ground closing to 8-5 in the sixth. An opportunity with the bases loaded in that inning faltered on a called third strike for the final out. “That first inning put us in a bad hole, and they beat us up pretty good last year,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “The bright side is that we fought back and continued to battle hard.”
Caleb Brown had two hits and two RBI for S-E, and Joe Moses added two hits and one RBI. S-E plays at Oneida today.
