SPCA seeks reimbursement for seized animals in Oxford cruelty case
OXFORD – An Oxford woman accused of not caring for her horse, pony and pig appeared in Town of Oxford Court Monday charged with animal cruelty.
Lida Cassata appeared before Town Justice John Wiedman over the misdemeanor charges without an attorney and requested an adjournment for one week so she could find counsel.
At the Monday hearing the SPCA’s attorney, Michael Ferrarese, who represents the agency on a pro bono basis, asked for a security posting of $2,678 to cover the first 30 days of care for the seized animals.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant of Cassata’s property March 15.
Deputies, with aid from the SPCA, seized a 4-year-old horse, 30-year-old pony and a pig. Police stated that the animals were confined without access to light, fresh air, and were malnourished. Deputies also said some of the animals suffered from severe lice infestations.
The pig is been housed at SPCA while the pony and horse have were taken to Meadowgate Equine Rescue & Rehabilitation in Newfield for treatment.
“The animals are eating well, their healthy and are recovering,” said SPCA Executive Director Carol Hedlund.
Ferrarese and Cassata agreed to enter a closed door conference to see if either side could work out an agreement over the amount owed to the SPCA, but returned to court 20 minutes later unable to reach a resolution.
Cassata is scheduled to appear back in court April 20 at 3 p.m. Ferrarese notified the court that the SPCA would have to amend its current bill to reflect the additional time.
Hedlund explained that the costs associated with the first month of care would far exceed the following months because the animals required up-to-date vaccinations and medical care.
She estimated that additional monthly amounts would range in the hundreds of dollars.
