Bainbridge crash leaves one dead, one charged with manslaughter
BAINBRIDGE – In the aftermath of an alcohol-related crash early Saturday morning, a van containing five area teenagers rolled over in the Town of Bainbridge, killing one, causing serious injuries to three others, and leaving the operator charged with manslaughter.
The driver of the vehicle, 17-year-old Trebor E. Hoxie of Norwich, was released from Lourdes Hospital Saturday and charged with second degree vehicular manslaughter. He was arraigned in the Town of Bainbridge Town Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $200,000 cash bail.
The New York State Police reported that Ashley Crisell, 18, of Norwich, suffered major head trauma and was pronounced dead at Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.
State police released the injuries of the three other teen passengers, who were still receiving treatment at Wilson Medical Center Sunday evening.
• Kathryn McLaughlin, 17, of Mount Upton, suffered a skull fracture, broken pelvis, and foot amputation. She remains in critical condition at Wilson Hospital.
• Darren Houck, 18, of Norwich, suffered multiple injuries and a punctured lung. He is in serious condition.
• Kathryn Card, 17, of Morris, suffered a broken right shoulder and a cut to her left upper thigh. She was listed in stable condition.
• Hoxie was treated at Lourdes Hospital for minor abrasions and complaints of pain and released into the custody of the state troopers.
Troopers said that none of the teens were wearing their seat belts and all of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle as it turned over several times. Police also said alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 5:55 a.m. Saturday morning along state Route 206 in the Town of Bainbridge. Police said Hoxie was driving a green, 2001 Dodge Caravan northwesterly when he lost control of the van and it veered off the right side of the road, striking a guide rail and overturning several times before coming to a rest on its wheels still in the roadway.
The teens were flown by Guthrie Air Medevac Helicopter and transported by Cooperstown Medical Transport from the scene.
New York State Police at Sidney were aided by Troop C Accident reconstruction and state police Binghamton personnel. The Chenango County District Attorney’s Office also responded to the scene.
Hoxie is scheduled to return to Bainbridge Town Court at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday for a felony hearing.
