Chenango River Theater offers summer drama classes
GREENE – Chenango River Theatre the Binghamton area’s equity, non-profit, professional theatre company, will offer two weeks of summer drama classes, taught by professional actors, at a special rate of just $95 for students registered by June 1. Due to CRT’s production schedule, enrollment is open only to the first 15 students to register for each of the two classes. Both classes will be taught at Chenango River Theatre’s new home at 991 State Highway 12, two miles south of Greene.
Taught by working professional actors from NYC and Toronto, each class meets daily at the theatre for two weeks. CRT’s Drama Classes are designed to introduce young people to the world of the theatre by providing students of all ages with the means to actively explore the dramatic process, craft and the discipline of performing. The goal of every class is to teach young performers the skills they need to articulate ideas, work as part of a group, problem solve and think creatively whether onstage or off. The classes provide students with valuable skills that will serve them in life and whatever profession they one day choose.
Acting 1: (Ages 8 to 11): 10 a.m. to noon weekdays, July 20 through 31.
Taught by NYC’s Haley Zale (who appeared last season in I Hate Hamlet & Crimes of the Heart). This class is based on the methods established by the extraordinarily successful children’s theatre educational program at Charleston Stage, Charleston, SC. This workshop will introduce young people to the exciting world of theatre and acting by providing students with the means to actively explore the dramatic process. They’ll learn such skills as how to create a character, discover the elements of plot, and how to use movement, speech and their imaginations to share a story with an audience. Students will develop their own unique creative voice using familiar stories and poems, culminating in a performance on the final day of class.
Acting 2 (Ages 12 and up): 1 to 3 p.m. weekdays, July 27 through August 7.
Toronto actress Heidi Weeks (who appeared last season in Other People’s Money and Crimes of the Heart and has been featured on numerous Canadian TV series, including Degrassi: The Next Generation) will teach a class utilizing theatre games and improv, resulting in students creating their own characters and scripts for a final performance. For the last three years, Heidi has taught the acting and dance students for the Canadian OSAID Leadership Youth Conference workshops - she has also been the choreographer for that program. Learn from a professional actress, a member of Actors’ Equity Association, the union for professional actors in both Canada and the US.
The cost for the progrm will be $95 if registered by June 1 or $120 after June 1.
