Big weekend for Milford Academy Alumni

NEW BERLIN – What do LeSean McCoy, Shonn Greene, Terrance Knighton, and Vaughn Martin have in common? All prefaced standout collegiate careers with a season at Milford Academy, and all four were selected within the first four rounds of the 2009 NFL Draft this past weekend in New York.
McCoy, a running back who spent two years at the University of Pittsburgh, was picked late in the second round by the Philadelphia Eagles. Greene, a junior running back from the University of Iowa, was tabbed as the first pick of the third round by the New York Jets. Greene is coming off a season in which he won the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s outstanding collegiate running back.
A few picks later in the third round, Temple defensive tackle, Terrance Knighton, went to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Martin was one of the more intriguing picks as he did not attend college in the United States. A defensive tackle, Martin attended Western Ontario in Canada after spending a season at Milford Academy. He was a teammate of McCoy’s three years ago.
“I’m really proud of them all, and they all played in New Berlin,” said Milford Academy headmaster and head football coach, Bill Chaplick.
Chaplick said the four NFL draft picks in the first four rounds is a record in his 10-year tenure at the school. A fifth player, Miami defensive tackle Antonio Dixon, was signed as a free agent Monday by the Washington Redskins.
“(The draft) shows what Milford Academy can do for guys and that they can have a great future,” Chaplick said. “They worked hard to get here, stay here, and get out of here. All that hard work is paying off.”
