Moon pitches Norwich to first victory

NORWICH – Norwich avenged a weekend loss to the Saints getting a complete-game three-hit victory from senior pitcher Mike Moon, and also won for the first time in six outings this season.
“Mike has improved tremendously the past two seasons, and he has great control of his fastball and change-up,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “His pitching was tremendous, and our defense did not make any fielding errors.”
Moon finished with seven strikeouts and one walk in holding a Seton club that scored 12 runs in a five-run victory over NHS last Saturday.
Moon, Tim Clark, Richie Bonney, and Brock Kossman had two hits for NHS (1-5), and Josh Borfitz added a two-run double in the third inning.
Norwich (1-5) plays at Chenango Valley Wednesday.

OXFORD – Oxford leveled its season log taking advantage of Hancock’s mistakes in Monday’s MAC divisional contest.
Tom Gould, Eddie Grundner, and Brett Trask all finished with two hits and three RBI for Oxford (4-4). Trask clipped a two-run triple in the sixth to up the Blackhawks’ lead to seven runs.
“They threatened a lot and I didn’t feel comfortable, even after we scored five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “A seven-run lead might not be enough the way they were hitting.”
Trask came on to pitch a scoreless seventh to support winning pitcher P.J. Hubman.
Oxford hosts Deposit today.

COOPERSTOWN – Sherburne-Earlville became the first team to not only defeat Cooperstown, but score a run on the Redskins in Monday’s game at Doubleday Field.
Caleb Brown pitched a complete-game victory striking out seven and not walking a batter. Nate Kline had two hits including a three-run double in the fifth with two outs. “We had timely hitting and just put the ball in play,” said S-E skipper Brian Hicks. “This game tells us we are right where we should be. Early in the season, we had a couple losses where the ball just didn’t bounce our way.”
Mike Doscher added two hits and two RBI, and Stephen Buddenhagen finished with two hits to aid the S-E effort.
The Marauders (5-3) play at Canastota today.

MORRIS – G-MU evened its Tri-Valley League record and scored the game’s final 13 runs after trailing in the first inning.
Three errors and a Chris Lanza RBI basehit keyed a seven-run second inning for the Raiders (1-1, 3-2). Brendan Zucchi added one of his two basehits in the frame to lead the Raiders’ batsmen.
“Most of our runs came in on errors, but we hit the ball and made them make plays,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson.
Tyler Wildfeir struck out eight, allowed one hit, and needed only 87 pitches for a complete-game victory. He was aided by a defense that finished with 10 assisted plays.

GREENE – Seventeen basehits were not enough for Greene to overcome 10 base on balls and five errors as the Trojans dropped their third straight game.
Chris Mead had three hits for Walton to go with four runs scored and two RBI.
Scott Gorton went 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI to lead Greene, while Nic Puglisi had three hits and three RBI. Nate Whittaker, Dan Carlin, and Dave Fors all pitched in with a pair of hits.
“Both pitchers had to thread the needle with the strike zone,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “When you have to throw the ball down the middle, both teams have too many good hitters. Both teams hit the ball well – it was a real slugfest.”

AFTON – Afton remained the lone unbeaten Chenango County team improving to 10-0 Monday night.
The Crimson Knights lashed two home runs during a seven-run third inning to assume command of the game. Victor Coronado smacked a three-run shot, and Mike Muller added a two-run blast giving Afton a 10-5 lead.
Muller came on in relief in the third inning and pitcher 4 2-3 innings of one-hit scoreless relief to get the victory. “It was tough early on for us, but Muller came in and shut the door on them,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp.
Cameron Oswald was a perfect 3-for-3, Muller finished with four RBI on two hits, while Coronado and Adam Rupakus also had two hits.

DEPOSIT – B-G won for the third time this season rallying to beat Deposit on the road Monday.
Paul Parsons pitched 2 1-3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. Parsons capped the victory striking out the side in the seventh inning after B-G plated the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh.
“Garrett Newbauer pitched his guts out for us early in the game, we just had that one bad inning that has hurt us all season,” said B-G coach Pete Mansheffer. “We swung the bats well, and Paul locked it down for us.”
Dustin Rutz led the Bobcats with a 3-for-4 day and three RBI. Travis Colburn drove in two runs on three hits, and lead-off hitter Danny Gormley had two hits, two walks, and three runs scored.

GREENE – Greene put together back-to-back seven-run innings to start the game, and extended its winning streak to nine games with a blowout win over Walton Monday.
Caitlin Willis cracked a three-run homer in the second inning finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI. Haley MacLaren had two hits, two runs, and two RBI, and Erin Smith doubled among her two hits finishing with a single RBI.
“There were a lot of passed balls the first two innings, but we were also hitting the ball hard,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We ran the bases well, a lot better than we have been doing.”
Winning pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan had 13 strikeouts, no walks, and allowed just three hits. She has not walked a batter in three games.

COOPERSTOWN – Sherburne-Earlville lost for the first time in four games this season as Cooperstown rallied for four runs in its final at-bat Monday.
The Redskins failed to get a hit over the first six innings off S-E starting pitcher Lindsay Hodges.
After a walk, a single, and an error scored the first run for Cooperstown, Anna Sams tied the game with a two-run double. Sams scored the winner on Erin Henrici’s basehit.
S-E scored its first two runs in the sixth getting RBI singles from Megan Record and Samantha Crandall. Hodges’ basehit in the seventh upped the lead to three runs.
Morgan Reid went 2-for-3 to lead S-E’s batters.

The eight-run output was the highest for the Tornado against a STAC team in several years, and it was more runs than NHS scored all last season.
Megan McAvoy went 3-for-4 with four runs scored to lead Norwich, and Shelby Congdon added two runs scored.
