Downed plane made last stop in Norwich

WEST EATON – New York State Police have identified the 56-year-old Canadian pilot who died after his plane crashed in the Town of West Eaton, Monday.
Troopers said Bernard LaFerriere of Quebec died after his plane crashed in a heavily wooded area near Westcott Road. They said a man riding an all-terrain vehicle on his property found the wreckage Tuesday afternoon and called police.
LaFerriere departed the Norwich Lt. Warren Eaton Airport Monday afternoon and never arrived at his destination.
Airport Manager Jamie Baciuska said the small “experimental plane,” was an Explorer Ecofyler and was not typically not mass produced.
He said LaFerriere left the Norwich airport between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Monday after arriving from another unknown destination at around 2:30 p.m.
Baciuska said he did not know what the plane’s exact destination was, but believed it to be somewhere in Canada.
Baciuska said about “6 to 10 other departures,” left from the airport on Monday including the crashed aircraft.
Troopers also said LaFerriere was heading to Canada and that he was reported missing by aviation workers at a Boston-area airport. Officials at Norwich said they were not alerted that the plane had been missing until yesterday.
Baciuska said LaFerriere fueled up his plane Monday, saying he stopped at the airport because of “abnormal wind conditions.”
State police and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating what caused the crash.
