Relay for Life wants you to paint the town purple
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango Relay for Life Committee is stepping up preparations for the 2009 Relay, to be held July 17 and 18 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. To get everyone in the relay spirit, the committee is asking community members to ‘go purple’ this Friday.
The Relay Committee plans a ‘Paint the Town Purple’ day on Friday. “It’s simply our request that people around Norwich and the surrounding towns in Chenango County show their support for the Relay for Life,” said event co-chair Marie DeSarro. That show of support can easily be achieved by donning purple, the official color of the relay.
Although relay events have already kicked off in Chenango County, DeSarro explained that ‘Paint the Town Purple’ day is the American Cancer Society’s official kickoff to Relay for Life season.
While committee members hope individuals will show their support for the relay, businesses, school districts and community groups are also invited to participate.
“The activities are really endless for this event,” DeSarro said. “Activities could range from dressing in purple or relay gear, to decorating your storefront in purple.” Other ideas include flying a purple flag, planting purple flowers, putting purple place mats out at a restaurant or handing out Relay for Life stickers on Friday.
Both the Unadilla Valley and Norwich School Districts are joining the effort. Students at Perry Browne Intermediate School have been asked to wear purple on Friday. At Unadilla Valley, teacher Sheryl Oglesby has been encouraging students and the community to take part in the event.
“At school, I’m going to get as many people as I can to wear purple and have teachers decorate their classroom doors for that day,” Oglesby said.
Those who participate in ‘Paint the Town Purple’ day are encouraged to take pictures of their office, school, organization or family participation and send them to mtdesarro1802@hotmail.com.
“We’d love to see the day promoted, so that it will continue to spark participation in the future,” DeSarro said.
