Hot SV beats Tornado; Oxford avenges loss to Afton

NORWICH – Norwich fell behind at the start, and dropped a home contest to Sus Valley that was shortened to six innings due to rain.
SV starting hurler, Ronnie Graham, had 12 strikeouts, only two walks, and gave up four Norwich hits. Four different Sabers had two basehits, and Chad Starzer’s two-run single in the fourth inning upped his team’s lead to 9-0.
“Their bats were hot and their pitcher was even hotter,” said Norwich coach John Martinson of Sus Valley.
Norwich’s Timmy Clark tripled and scored on a passed ball in the fifth for Norwich’s only run.

OXFORD – Oxford avenged an early-season loss to Afton, and won its fifth straight game over a seven-day period.
Oxford (7-4), now a game ahead in MAC’s Division II, scored three runs in the fifth to surge in front. At the bottom of the batting order, Derrick Head, Jamie Smolcnop, and John Corbett had singles, Corbett’s driving in a run. P.J. Hubman had an RBI single to tie the game, and Tom Gould plated the go-ahead run with a single.
Afton loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh innings, but managed just run, that coming after an error.
Starting pitcher Kyle Ferrington fanned Afton’s batter for the last out of the sixth, and reliever P.J. Hubman got the last two outs of the game on a strikeout and a groundout.
“The bottom of the order was huge for us tonight, that and Kyle’s pitching,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “It’s been a huge week for us and we’re in the best spot (first-place) right now. Still, we have to continue to play good baseball.”
Derrick Head went 3-for-3 with two doubles, Smolcnop was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Chris Covey was 2-for-2.
Tyler Lawrence had two hits for Afton (10-2), and Jake Arnold had a two-run single in the fourth.

BAINBRIDGE – Harpursville rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, and the contest was halted after seven innings due to rain Friday.
B-G grabbed a 4-1 lead with back-to-back two-run innings in the fourth and fifth. Dustin Rutz, Mark Buchanan, and Paul Parsons had three hits apiece for the Bobcats (3-7-1). “It was a very well played game by both teams, and by far our best defensive effort of the season,” said B-G coach Pete Mansheffer.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS – G-MU completed a perfect 5-0 week taking two games to win the Richfield Springs Tournament Saturday.
In the finals, G-MU scored four runs in the last of the sixth to erase the host team’s three-run lead. Jon Scofield had an RBI infield single to tie the game, and following an error on the same play, came home on Greg Delaney’s fielder’s choice to second base. “They made some mistakes in the sixth inning, and we were able to capitalize,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson.
Tyler Wildfeir, who scattered nine hits for the win, needed only six pitches in the final inning retiring Richfield Springs in order.
The Raiders (7-2) began the day with a rout of Sharon Springs, that after trailing 1-0 in the first. “We started slow, then we were able to get it rolling,” Johnson said.
Scofield was a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while winning pitcher Cody Hall went 3-for-4. Alex Schmidt and Nate Sloan added two ribbies apiece.

GREENE – Greene put itself in commanding position as the MAC Division One front-runner beating Sidney for the second time this season.
The win gives Greene a two-game division lead over the Warriors, who kept the Trojans from winning division titles the past two seasons.
“Last year we lost to them in a division tiebreaker, and two years ago, they beat us in the last game when we had a chance to clinch the division,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “This win was huge and we had a nice crowd to support us. We haven’t clinched the division title yet, but one of our goals this year was to sweep Sidney.”
Greene broke through against Sidney starter, Dani Gravel, with two runs in the third. Erin Smith scored Tara Bub with an RBI fielder’s choice. “That inning opened things up for us,” Smith said. “We started to make a lot of contact and make their defense play the ball.”
Stephanie Stahl came off the bench to rip a two-run double in the sixth. Reserve Rachel Turner also turned in a basehit and run scored. Emily Pierce and Alyssa David contributed single RBIs.
The Trojans improved to 6-0 in division play and 11-2 overall. Caitlin Willis finished 2-for-3 at the plate, and winning pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan struck out 14 and allowed just one Sidney hit.

Winans had two hits for the Crimson Knights including a triple.
Oxford tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the second. Allie Nelson, Misty Golden, and Alyshia Crawford all had RBI singles. Ashlee Farwell finished with two hits for Oxford.
“Winans made some great plays at shortstop that ended some rallies, said Oxford coach Margo Barrows. “We definitely had our chances. A couple plays go our way, the game goes our way.”

COPES CORNERS – Franklin opened up a big lead with seven runs in the third, and came back with four more in the fourth in a victory at G-MU Friday.

Franklin benefited from four G-MU errors in the third, and the Raiders made eight miscues for the game. “If we only could get rid of that bad inning, we’d have a much tighter ballgame,” said G-MU coach Nancy Estabrook. “Courtney (Hillman) pitched a very nice game for us. We just seemed to make one error after another (in the third).”
Katie Backhuizen went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead G-MU, and Calli Hill added an RBI.

S-E 10, Norwich 3 (finals)
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville defeated Norwich in the finals of its own tournament Saturday afternoon, its second victory over the Tornado this season.
Lindsay Hodges homered for the Marauders (6-3) finishing 3-for-4 from the plate. She added a career-high 19 strikeouts and was named the tourney’s most valuable player.
“This tournament is a good boost to get us headed back in the right direction,” said S-E coach Scott Fitzpatrick, whose team had suffered some recent setbacks.
All-tournament pick, Samantha Crandall, was 4-for-4 at the plate. Morgan Reid, Karli Harris, Nicki Button, and Grace Dunshee all added two hits apiece for S-E.
Megan McAvoy had two hits and scored two wins for the Tornado, who picked up their first win of the season earlier in the day against Unadilla Valley.
Crandall hit a solo homer in the opening inning against Clinton in a 6-0 shutout victory.
Crandall had two hits and two RBI, and Brenda Hoefler added a pair of base knocks. Hodges struck out 13 for the win, and S-E expanded a two-run lead scoring three runs in the fifth inning.
Norwich advanced to the finals beating the Storm 8-4. McAvoy was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored for Norwich, and Kristen Carpenter struck out five for the win.
Kara Collins had two hits for UV including a home run.
