Classic cars cruise in to Greene
GREENE – There is good news for the classic car enthusiasts who flocked to downtown Greene every other Thursday last summer: The Greene Cruise In is back.
Starting May 7, the bi-weekly Cruise In, which drew an average of 60 street rods and antique cars plus a large crowd of spectators each week, will return from 6 to 9 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of every month through October 17.
With a host of giveaways donated by local merchants, contests, prizes and DJ Jimmy B playing a mix of oldies and goodies, event sponsors promise this year’s Cruise In will be even bigger and better than ever.
“The more people we can get here the better,” said Enzo Olivieri from Nathanael Greene’s Publick House who, along with Tri-County Collision and Wes “Big Wally” VanVoorhies, sponsors the Greene Cruise In.
According to Olivieri’s wife Irene, the event is designed to both bring the local community together, and also to attract people from outside of the area to downtown Greene. Last year it did just that, with car owners coming from not only Chenango and Broome counties, but Pennsylvania as well.
Owners take a great deal of pride in their cars and love the opportunity to show them off, she said. At each event a “crowd favorite” is selected.
The Cruise In, which is free to both spectators and car owners, encourages these visitors to patronize local businesses, she explained.
VanVoorhies, who serves as the Cruise In’s MC, attributes much of the Cruise In’s success to the support it has received from local residents. “It’s really been a symbiotic relations between the community, fire (department), police, us and the business community,” he explained to village trustees when the organization sought approval to continue the event this year.
The Olivieri’s and VanVoorhies are constantly trying to improve upon last year’s event and are currently working to get more local merchants involved. They will also be hanging vinyl signs before each Cruise In, to direct those coming from out of town to the downtown area.
The board, which approved the sponsors’ request, were optimistic about the Cruise In’s future.
“I think it’s going to continue to grow,” said Trustee Rod Andrews.
The first Cruise In of the year will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 7 in front of Nathanael Greene’s Publick House, 47 Genesee St. in Greene. They will continue the first and third Thursdays of every month through October 17.
