Sherburne Wheelers begin weekly bike night
SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Bike Night is back for a third year. The weekly motorcycle cruise-in event will begin at 5 tonight at Gilligan’s Island on Rt. 12 in Sherburne and will continue every Wednesday until the end of September.
According to Sherburne Wheelers President Lex Danyluk, the highlight of bike night is the “camaraderie and the fellowship among the bikers.” At the peak of last year’s bike night, over 370 bikes were in town for the event. “It’s about coming together to hang out and see each other and for a common cause, which is cancer,” Danyluk said.
While the weekly gathering is a chance for area bikers to socialize and have fun, the Sherburne Wheelers have a larger purpose for their weekly events: they raise money to distribute gas cards to cancer patients who need to travel for treatments. “Last year we raised $3,861, which we turned into $100 gas cards to help people with travel expenses,” Danyluk explained. As an incorporated, fully insured organization, the Sherburne Wheelers, with the help of Mirabito Fuel Group providing an additional 3 percent on every purchase, was able to give back 103 percent of the money raised to cancer patients. The group holds a 50/50 raffle at each event to raise money for the cause.
With the help of Kendra Ives at Chenango Health Network and individuals from the American Cancer Society, the Wheelers developed a form for cancer patients to fill out if they are interested in receiving a gas card. Danyluk stressed that the cards are not just available to local residents. Since many of those who participate in bike night are from out of the area, the gas cards are available to people from outside the area as well.
This year, bike night T-shirts, pins and do-rags will be sold at the event. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the do-rag sales will be donated to the American Cancer Society. “We’re getting to be a big group. Not in terms of members, but in terms of what we do for the community. We’re proud of the things we do,” Danyluk said.
For the first bike night event, a bike blessing will be held. Pastor Jay Henderson of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church will be on hand to bless the motorcycles.
At a future event, the group plans to have a kids night. During the event, an area will be roped off for children to bring their bicycles. Raffles and prizes for the kids will be available for the event.
In addition to the regular bike night events, the Sherburne Wheelers will be participating in this year’s Chenango County Relay for Life. Teaming up with Norwich American Legion Post 189, the group will be walking in the event on July 17 and 18.
