Norwich board member resigns

NORWICH – During Tuesday night’s Norwich City School Board of Education meeting, board member Tim Brown announced his resignation.
Brown, who was appointed to the board to fill a vacancy two years ago, was elected to the seat in 2008. While he gave no reason for his resignation, Brown thanked the community for the opportunity he experienced.
Brown’s vacancy will create a fourth open seat on the board. Three board members were up for re-election this year, and four candidates had petitioned to be on the ballot. Current board members Perry Owen, Joe Stagliano and Sally Chirlin are seeking re-election, and Norwich resident Mark Hollifield had petitioned to also be on the ballot.
Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan said he is not sure if Brown’s seat will now be on the ballot or not. “Traditionally, the board can do one of three things: fill the vacant seat, leave the seat vacant or hold a special election,” O’Sullivan said. With the upcoming election already scheduled, the superintendent said he was unsure what the next steps will be. O’Sullivan said he will determine how to proceed within the next few days.
