“Glitter Queen” presents final lecture in series tonight
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s senior class wanted to leave a lasting gift to the community, one that they could enjoy throughout their last year of high school. With that idea in mind they decided to host a local version of the Last Lecture series, and tonight, the final talk in that series will be held.
Already this year, students have heard lectures from two teachers selected earlier this year, Michael Rodriguez and Rennie Korver. Tonight’s final lecture will be given by kindergarten teacher Nancy Heck, affectionately known as “The Glitter Queen.”
The differences among the three teachers selected are many. Aside from their teaching areas, the three have different backgrounds and experiences and each brings something different to the table.
Heck, who has taught in the public and private sector for more than 34 years, will speak about life, in her lecture titled “Life Is Not a Dress Rehearsal.” Heck first began teaching in Hamilton and then at the Chenango Nursery School before coming to the Sherburne district in 1985. When asked about her history with the senior class, Heck explained that she had at least 14 of the current seniors in her kindergarten class. “When each child graduates, I give them a packet, which includes projects, letters, pictures which they did in kindergarten,” she said. While the project has required Heck to store at least the next 12 years worth of packets at her home, she said the kids are really excited when they receive the packets.
“Hopefully what I say will provide food for thought about life and education,” Heck said. Her lecture will include some private thoughts on friends, families and children. In addition, Heck said she will speak about, “the importance of music in our lives, my thoughts about today’s education for young children and, of course, glitter will be discussed and demonstrated.”
While each of the series lecturers has brought a different experience and view point to the students and the community, Heck is sure to bring something unique. “Most people can’t say they are known as The Glitter Queen more than they are known by their own name,” said Senior Class Advisor Jonathan Sherry. In addition to her regal title, Heck is known as the unofficial Mayor of Hamilton, and an incredible mother and grandmother.
Heck will present her lecture at 7 tonight at the S-E High School Auditorium. Admission is free.
