Chenango Health Network goes red for heart health

NORWICH – Heart disease is the number one cause of death in Chenango County and the United States, and to bring that issue to light, the Chenango Health Network will be hosting a “Go Red Chenango Heart Festival” from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday in West Side Park, Norwich.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease killed more than 652,000 people in the United States in 2005, accounting for more than 27 percent of all U.S. deaths. Risk factors for heart disease include: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, physical inactivity, obesity and smoking. According to the CDC, approximately 37 percent of adults exhibit two or more of those risk factors.
According to Stephanie Miller, the event coordinator, the CHN has held a women’s health festival for several years, but this is the first year the event will focus on heart health. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America for women and men,” Miller said. She explained that many women do not realize they are at risk for the disease. “We’re trying to get the message out.”
The Chenango event will focus on heart disease prevention and screening. According to a news release from CHN, the event will include “free blood pressure testing, along with other educational vendors.” An array of activities will be offered, with new events beginning every hour.
According to Miller, area business and agencies will be present at the event to provide information about the services they offer. The event will include Zumba lessons, BodyPump demonstrations, ballroom dancing, yoga and massage sessions. Samples of heart healthy foods and recipes will be provided by the Canasawacta Country Club and educational information will be available. Aim Fitness, Chenango County Public Health, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Chenango Bounty and several Chenango Health Network participating agencies will be on hand.
In addition to the activities offered, the event will include a screening of the DVD “Heart of the Country, 5 Women Talk about Heart Disease.” The film follows five women who are living with or working to prevent heart disease, as well as two medical professionals who discuss ways to deal with the number one cause of death for women.
“It’s a free event and it’s going to be tons of fun,” said Miller. A DJ will be on hand to play music throughout the event. “There will be a lot of information available,” Miller said. The Heart Festival will be held rain or shine.
Chenango Health Network operates with the objective “to increase access to health and wellness information and to health care services. Our goal is to improve the quality of life in every community in Chenango County,” the news release states.
